What AEO actually means for a small business

For twenty years, being “found” online meant one thing: ranking on Google. That’s changing. A growing share of how people find a business now runs through AI — asking an assistant for a recommendation, a search engine’s AI overview summarizing options before a single blue link appears, a voice assistant reading out “the best-rated place nearby.” None of that works the way traditional SEO does.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring a business’s information so AI systems can find it, understand it correctly, and recommend it confidently. That means consistent, accurate business information across the places AI systems pull from; clear, structured descriptions of what a business actually does and offers (AI tends to skip over vague marketing language); and enough verifiable detail — hours, location, services, policies — that an AI system trusts it as a source rather than passing over it.

The businesses losing out here usually aren’t doing anything wrong by old standards. Their website reads fine to a person. But it’s thin, inconsistent, or unstructured in ways that make it hard for an AI system to extract a confident answer from — so it quietly recommends a competitor instead. AEO doesn’t replace a good website or good reviews; it’s what makes sure the business is actually legible to the systems increasingly standing between customers and their decision.
